[Dot ] [Dot] Hospice care can benefit many terminally ill patients for whom curative treatments are no longer working but who are not yet in the last days or weeks of their lives. Hospice care is appropriate for patients both at home and in a nursing home. Indeed, experience shows that the sooner hospice care begins, the more successfully patients and their families cope with the stresses of illness and the inevitability of death. We've prepared the following checklist to help you determine whether hospice services are appropiate for terminally ill patients in your care.

Have curative treatments stopped working?

Will continued curative care increase the patient's discomfort without improving his or her medical condition?
